Gastroenterology Department
Department description
The Gastroenterology Department provides comprehensive care for patients with diseases of the digestive tract. We focus on the treatment of diseases of the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, biliary tract and pancreas. The department includes a gastroenterology outpatient clinic and three endoscopy rooms.
Since June 2007, our department has been established as a centre for biological treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Biological treatment is applied in the premises of our department. The outpatient clinic also includes a Nutrition Clinic, whose services are mainly used by oncology patients in malnutrition. Examinations in our outpatient clinics take place by appointment.
Using digestive endoscopy methods, our facility provides a greater number of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for cancerous and non-cancerous diseases of the digestive tract. Gastroscopy (examination of the oesophagus, stomach and part of the duodenum) together with colonoscopy (examination of the rectum and colon) is performed every working day - special preparation and an appointment is required. Our clinic is involved in a nationwide programme of preventive screening for colorectal cancer.
Once a week, in cooperation with the team of the Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation Department, we perform endoscopy under deeper analgosedation or general anaesthesia, including the insertion of PEG - percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. Furthermore, once a week we also perform endoscopic examinations of patients of the Paediatric Department in cooperation with the doctors of the ARO Department.
Since the end of 2018, we have had our own ultrasonography equipment, and we focus mainly on ultrasound examinations of the intestines, liver, biliary tract, pancreas and liver elastography.
In indicated cases, we perform untargeted liver biopsies under ultrasound control (during hospitalization). We also examine the pancreas and extrahepatic bile ducts with a linear echoendoscope.
In the Radiodiagnostic Department we examine patients using the ERCP method (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography - examination of the biliary and pancreatic ducts).
Annually, we perform more than 1700 gastroscopies, approximately 1700 colonoscopies, 350 ERCP examinations and almost 250 endosonographies. Our team provides 24-hour emergency endoscopy service every day of the calendar year.
